How to Know When to Change a Vape Coil ?

No matter what type of vaping device you own, changing a vape coil is going to be a regular part of your routine. To maintain the best possible flavor and performance, you’ll need to replace the coil in your vape tank or pod system every few days or so. Thankfully, it’s a quick and easy process which takes no more than a couple of minutes.

But how do you know when to change your coil and what are the main signs to look out for?

1. Your vape tastes burnt

The most notable indicator that your vape coil needs changing is a burnt taste as you inhale on the device. This occurs as the cotton inside your coil burns or deteriorates over time as you use it. If you’re experiencing a burnt taste from your vape it’s probably time to change the coil.

A burnt taste can also occur if you have not ‘primed’ your new vape coil. To read how to do this see our Guide to Priming a Vape Coil.

There are Other reasons why your vape tastes burnt and we've got fixes for them all here.

2. Your e-liquid doesn’t taste right

Rather than the burnt taste mentioned above, you may find that you’re e-liquid just isn’t tasting quite right. If you aren’t getting the flavour profile you usually expect from your favourite e-liquid it may be time to replace the coil .

3. Your Vape Tastes ‘Strange

This one is a little harder to define. But is another that most vapers will come across. You’ll use the same e-liquids as usual but find that they just don’t hit the spot anymore. Maybe they taste very dull, maybe they taste a bit odd, or maybe they don’t have any flavour at all. You might even be able to tell the difference in the e-liquid itself. It could look darker than normal as if it’s taking on other colours when you put it in the tank.

4. You aren’t getting as much vapour as before

Another indicator that your coil needs changing is a reduction in the amount of vapour your device is producing. As the coil deteriorates over time it won’t be able to vaporise the e-liquid in your tank with the same gusto as it once did .

5. Your e-liquid is turning dark

There are a number of reasons why your e-liquid is turning dark and one of them is that your coil needs changing. With prolonged use the wick and wire inside the coil can experience a build-up of residue and clog up. p>

6. Your vape starts leaking or gurgling

If your vape starts to leak or gurgle the culprit could be your coil. As the cotton wick deteriorates, extra liquid can flood into the coil which will result in either a gurgly vape or the excess liquid leaking out of the airflow of the tank or pod. There are a number of reasons a tank could leak or gurgle but if all the rubber seals on your tank or pod are intact and there is no other visible indications of any other issue, the first port of coil will be to replace the coil and 9 times out of 10 that should stop the leaking or gurgling.

7. Replace your tank and refill

You are free to screw your tank back on after the new coil is in place. The next step is to refill with your chosen e-liquid.Boom! You’re now ready to rock with your new coil and fresh e-juice. It’s time to enjoy your vaping sessions again .

How long to vape coils last?

The lifespan of a vape coil will greatly depend on how much you use it.

For most vapers, the average coil will last around 1 to 2 weeks. This is only a rough estimate and there can be wide variation in the lifespan of a coil.

If you use your e-cigarette only occasionally, your coil could last up to a month or if you use it extensively at high wattage it may only last a number of days. Every person and device is different but after you’ve used your device for a while you’ll have a good idea of when it’s time for a coil change.

Other factors that affect the lifespan of a coil include;

1.The wattage/power the coil is used at

2. The frequency of puffs

3. The length of puffs

4. The e-liquid type (VG or PG, sugar/sweetener content, etc)

5. The e-liquid type (VG or PG, sugar/sweetener content, etc)

How often to change vape coils is dependent on many factors and there are signs you need to watch out for to know your coil is due for replacement.

However, always keep at the back of your mind that a good coil should last you on average two weeks if you use it regularly. And that’s supposing everything is in the right order and you’re following proper maintenance tips.

How to Change a Vape Coil in a Pod System

1. When the pod is empty, remove it from the device and hold it upside down.

2.Twist the pod’s base to loosen and remove it. Note that in some cases, this step isn’t necessary because the coil is inserted directly into the bottom of the pod. If you see the base of the coil when removing the pod from the device, the pod doesn’t have a twist-off base.

3. Pull the old coil out of the pod.

4. Push a new coil into the pod.

5. Replace the pod’s base and refill the pod.

How to Change a Coil in a Vape Tank

Vape tanks are just a bit more complex than vape pods, and that’s one reason why pod systems are so popular among new vapers who’d rather keep things as simple as possible.

1. When the tank is empty, remove it from the vape mod and hold it upside down.

2. Twist the tank’s bottom hardware to loosen and remove it. The Innokin Zenith II uses a simple push-pull coil replacement system that’s much the same as with most pod systems. If your tank uses the push-pull system, you’ll see the coil inside the main body of the tank. In other tanks, the coil may be screwed into the tank’s base.

3. If the tank uses the push-pull coil replacement system, pull the coil out of the main body of the tank. If the coil is screwed into the tank’s base, twist it out of the base.

4. Install a new coil by pushing it into the main body of the tank (push-pull system) or by screwing it into the tank’s base (screw-in system).

5. Reassemble and refill the tank.
