How to Prime Your Vape Coil

Before you use them, vape coils need to be primed. This is a very simple thing to do, but if you don't do it, then it can cause them to burn out prematurely. With that in mind, we have a handy guide below that walks you through the best practice to prime your coil.

WHAT IS PRIMING Coil?

Priming is the process of preparing your coil to be used to vape. It is important to have a fair understanding of how to prime your coil to ensure you get the best experience. Also, make sure to do this with every new coil you use.

A Vape coil is the heating element in your vape device. Priming your vape coil simply refers to ensuring that enough e-liquid is soaked into the coil and the wicking to ensure that it does not burn out when power and heat are applied.

The care and time involved in priming usually depend on the resistance of the coil, which is measured in ohms (Ω). This is because the lower the resistance of the coil, the more cotton/wicking it has. The increased wicking material leads to more potential for dry spots on the cotton, and therefore an increased chance of burning it.

Five easy steps to prime your vape coil

    1. Apply e-liquid to the visible cotton parts of the coil. Most coils will have visible cotton on the top of the coil and on the sides. Allow the e-liquid to soak into the cotton until it is visibly wet with e-liquid. If you get excess liquid into the airflow section of the coil either blow through the coil or flick the coil to clear it (we recommend doing this outside or over a sink). You can also wipe any excess liquid off the metal parts of coil with a tissue. You can also watch video  the step to change the prime coil

2. Install the coil and fill your tank or pod with vape juice. You should now leave the tank to sit for up to 5 minutes to allow the e-liquid to fully saturate the coil.

3. The next step is to take some puffs on the tank without firing the device. This will help to ensure the cotton wick is fully saturated with e-liquid. If your device has automatic firing simply remove the tank or pod from the battery section before taking these ‘primer’ puffs. If the device gurgles or spits at this point you can again blow through it or flick the device to clear the airflow.

4. Once you’re happy the coil is saturated with liquid you can start to fire the device. If possible, we recommend adjusting the wattage to a lower setting before taking a puff. If there is any burnt flavour leave the tank for a little longer for the liquid to soak into the coil. You can now gradually increase the power to your desired setting.

If your coil is very small or you’re not sure how to complete step 1, don’t worry. Simply increase the time you leave the tank to sit up to 10 or even 15 minutes to ensure the cotton is fully saturated.

WHY IS PRIMING YOUR VAPE COIL IMPORTANT?

It is important to prime new vape coils as, if you installed a new, dry vape coil, filled up your tank and then used it right away, you would likely damage your coil due to ‘dry spots’ present. This can cause either a very unpleasant burning taste, or if the damage was not severe it could still result in muted flavour and reduced vapour production.

If your coil was partially saturated, and you are experiencing a muted flavour or reduced vapour, remove the coil and revisit the 3 priming steps above to try and restore normal operation. This is not guaranteed to work however and you might end up having to replace the coil anyway. If your coil is completely damaged, the cotton will be burnt, taste very unpleasant and will not work correctly. It is likely that you will need to replace your coil with a new one and ensure that you prime before you vape. So, it is essential that any new vape coil is correctly primed before use to ensure you have a true vaping experience and you don’t have to repurchase a new coil before you need to.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE A COIL?

The lifespan of a coil will vary depending on a number of factors. The first being the number of times it is used. Also, the type of e-liquid will affect the lifespan of the coil. Thicker and sweeter e-liquid will shorten how long it will last.

You’ll know it’s time to swap the coil if you experience any of the following:

      1. The vape tastes burnt.

2.The e-cig is gurgling when in use.

      3. The flavour has turned unpleasant.
